Dance Classes

Dance:

Students will acquire physical knowledge and awareness of basic dance techniques and styles with an emphasis on ballet, jazz, lyrical, and hip-hop.  Students in this class will be introduced to creative choreographic principles, performance, responding and connecting at the basic level.  Students will be committed to performing in the annual winter and spring concerts, if public gatherings have been approved. 

Advanced Dance:

This course is recommended for the student who has mastered basic ballet and jazz technical skills. Students should be able to demonstrate basic to intermediate level in jazz, lyrical, and hip-hop styles.  This course will emphasize creating, performing, responding, and connecting in dance.  Students will participate in small group activities utilizing advanced choreographic principles and learn about dance history, performance, and production.  Students are expected to participate in the annual winter and spring dance concerts.
Prerequisites: Dance; or 1 year of equivalent outside dance experience (assessed by audition).

Performance Dance:

This course is recommended for the dancer who has mastered ballet and jazz technical skills at the advanced level and displays advanced movement in jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop styles of dance.  Emphasis of this class is on performance and creativity.  Students are required to perform at school and community events throughout the school year.   Students are expected to create original works of choreography using advanced choreographic principles and are required to perform in the annual winter and spring dance concerts. Performance Dance may work alongside IB Dance. This class is recommended for freshman and sophomores who are interested in IB Dance, or any dancer who has completed advanced dance or has other previous dance experience and who wants to progress in their dance skill.
Prerequisites: Audition required (recommended Advanced Dance or 2 years of equivalent outside dance experience).

IB Dance:

The IB dance program is a two year course of study starting in grade 11 and 12.  It is a rigorous course that seeks to challenge students who are motivated as self-learners.  Students will be exposed to and learn a variety of dance techniques, performance skills, dance from other cultures, compositional tools, somatic practices, research practice and dance history.  Students will also perform their work in progress at formal and informal showings throughout the year.
Prerequisites: Audition required (recommended Advanced Dance or 2 years of equivalent outside dance experience).
