Make sure your child has access to healthy meals all summer long!

California’s Summer EBT program, called SUN Bucks, will be back in 2025! Eligible families will receive $120 per child to help buy groceries during the summer months. Receiving SUN Bucks will not affect your immigration status.

Be sure your mailing address is up to date with both your child’s school and the county so your SUN Bucks arrive at the right place!

What Is Sun Bucks?

Sun Bucks is a summer food assistance program that provides eligible families with $120 per child to help cover the cost of groceries during the summer months when school meals are not available. This initiative ensures that students continue to have access to nutritious food even when school is out.

Who Is Eligible?

To receive Sun Bucks, eligibility must be verified through one of the following methods:

  • Automatic Verification: Families already enrolled in qualifying programs (e.g., SNAP, TANF, Medicaid) . No action is needed.
  • Manual Verification: If your child is not automatically verified, you must submit a Universal Benefits Application (this can be done in our income survey during data confirmation) or provide proof of income or program participation. Acceptable documents include:
    • Recent pay stubs
    • Benefit award letters (SNAP, TANF, Medicaid)
    • Foster care placement documentation
    • Homeless/migrant status confirmation from school liaison

How Does It Work?

  • Families will receive a Sun Bucks card(similar to a debit card) by mail.  Please make sure the mailing address that you have in the school’s system is accurate.  Contact your school’s registrar if you need to make an address change
  • The card can be used to buy groceries at participating retailers.

How to Apply

Most families do not need to apply if their child is already enrolled in free/reduced meals or receives benefits through other qualifying programs. However, if your child is not automatically enrolled:

  1. Complete a Universal Benefits Application through your school and submit at the Parent Welcome Center. Parents who complete data confirmation at the beginning of each school year have completed their Universal Benefits Application.
  2. Submit the application before the deadline to ensure summer benefit eligibility.
