In-School Suspension (ISS) & Behavior Contract Policies
- What is the purpose of ISS?
The purpose of ISS is to correct a behavior while reinforcing student accountability. We are all invested in students' becoming responsible citizens.
- How does a student receive ISS?
Scenario I
No Show to teacher assigned Detentions = Thursday School
No Show to Thursday Schools = ISS
** (A high percentage of students are in ISS because of a No Show to a detention which has led to a No show to a Thursday School. It is important to remind students to go to their detentions so that they do not spend a day in ISS for it. Depending upon the situation Thursday/Saturday schools may be reassigned 1-2 times per year with parental consent.) **
Scenario II
All Day Truancy/ Unexcused Absence = Saturday School
No Show to Saturday School = ISS
Scenario III
Partial Day Truancy (1-3 Periods) = Thursday School
No Show to Thursday School = ISS
Scenario IV
Classroom Contract Violations: (Consequences per Conduct Agreement A)
1st Offense= 1 Day ISS, 2nd Offense= 2 Days ISS, 3rd Offense= Drop/Fail Class
- Is there a limit of how many days a student may serve ISS per year? Yes!
In a school year students can serve no more than three days of ISS. After three days of ISS parental contact is made and the student is placed on a Behavior Contract (a.k.a. Conduct Agreement). At this point the student does not serve ISS again. Any Violations/ No Shows that accrue after a student is placed on a Behavior Contract result in Home Suspension.
(Consequences per Conduct Agreement B: 1st Offense= One Day Home Suspension, 2nd Offense Three Days Home Suspension, 3rd Offense Five Days Home Suspension w/ Recommendation for Expulsion)
- What is expected of students in ISS?
Students are held accountable for completing classroom assignments in ISS or they will be given an "ISS Assignment" to complete. Our ISS instructor informs all teachers of the students who will be serving ISS the following day. This list is for teachers who wish to provide assignments for their students to complete in ISS. Assignments/Materials for students in ISS maybe brought up to the A.P. Office in the afternoon prior or the morning of ISS. There is a designated drop-off area for all ISS Materials. Teachers may also e-mail the assignments to Ingrid Weber, provided that the students have the appropriate textbooks.
Thank you for sharing in the common goal of students' becoming responsible citizens.
